Dietitians evaluate the health of their patients. Based on their findings, dietitians advise patients on which foods to eat—and those foods to avoid-to improve their health. Dietitians help to promote healthy food choices and prevent disease by increasing awareness of the link between nutrition and health.

Diet plays the most important role in promotion of health and well being of a human being. A good and balanced diet habit improves the quality of life, as poor diet might cause morbidity and illnesses. Nutritionists as well as dietetics are troubled with this facet. As dietetics is linked to food management, owing to changes in food habits of the majority of the population, role of dietitians is turning out to be more significant. They recommend remedial food habits bearing in mind different aspects of a person, for example age, work habit, illness etc. and in this manner improve their quality of life. They train their patients regarding preparation of food, in keeping with the principles of nutrition. They are on familiar terms with food production and processing, psychological issues controlling food preferences, digestion and its outcomes on dietary aspects.

Dietitians work on an individual by taking care in account with individual body type/ constitution along with other factors:

  • Assess patients’ health needs and diet
  • Providing health advice and promoting healthy eating
  • Develop meal plans, taking both cost and patients’ preferences into account
  • Evaluate the effects of meal plans and change the plans as needed
  • Helping people come to terms with their illnesses
  • Write reports to document patient progress
  • Supporting the work of other healthcare professionals
